Factory equipment group
Ford introduced the Mustang GT Equipment Group during the 1965 model year rather than as a separate body style or VIN series. It required an eligible four-barrel 289 V8 and bundled functional performance hardware with visible GT identification.
The visual pieces are widely reproduced, so fog lamps, stripes, emblems, or exhaust trumpets alone do not authenticate a factory GT. Original paperwork and the correct brake, suspension, exhaust, wiring, instrument, and body details should agree.

Factory equipment group
Ford's March 1966 price list describes the GT Equipment Group as an integrated V8 package, not a separate body style or VIN series. Its listed contents include dual exhaust, fog lamps and grille bar, special ornamentation, front disc brakes, special handling components, and the GT stripe.
Because the package's visible pieces are widely reproduced, badges, lamps, stripes, exhaust trumpets, and a GT gas cap are clues rather than proof. Documentation and a compatible drivetrain, brakes, suspension, wiring, and body details should agree.

Factory equipment group
For 1967 the GT Equipment Group remained an option package rather than a separate body style or VIN series. The redesigned Mustang and new 390 made the GT/GTA identity especially visible, but the badge alone does not establish how a car was built.
Ford specified dual exhaust with bright quad extensions for GT cars using the 390 or 289 High-Performance V8. Other V8 GT configurations did not receive that statement in the facts booklet.
Marti notes that Ford records can list package content differently from individual equipment. A tachometer included with a 390/four-speed combination, for example, may not appear as a separate option. Authentication should combine a Marti report, original paperwork, and compatible physical evidence.
