First Generation

1965 Mustang Buyers Guide

Early Mustangs reward paperwork and structure-first inspection: cowl, floors, torque boxes, door data plate, body stampings, GT/Pony/K-code clues, and date-code evidence matter more than fresh paint.

Inspection Checklist

Body, Rust, And Structure

  • Start with the cowl, where hidden rust can turn into a major repair, then inspect the floors, rockers, torque boxes, and rear leaf-spring mounts before valuing cosmetic work.
  • Use a flashlight and magnet rather than trusting fresh paint; the shop-backed first-generation trouble list is the cowl, floor pans, rockers, torque boxes, and rear leaf-spring mounts.

Drivetrain And Safety

  • A real 1965 GT should be A-code or K-code and should have hard-to-fake clues such as disc brakes, five-dial cluster, fog-lamp wiring, exhaust valance/reinforcements, quick steering, and correct deleted trim.
  • Six-cylinder origin usually shows four-lug wheels while V8 cars used five-lug hardware; V8 swaps should have brake, suspension, rear axle, cooling, and fuel-system work documented.
  • For early-vs-late 1965 claims, ask for build-date and engine-code evidence; all 1964 1/2 and 1965 cars use a 5 model-year VIN digit.

Paperwork And Tags

  • Decode the VIN first, then the door warranty/data plate, then compare body, paint, trim, axle, transmission, and DSO against the visible car. A replaced door can carry the wrong tag.
  • For pre-1967 cars, lean harder on physical evidence, date codes, original photos, owner history, and registry documentation because Marti production reports do not cover 1966-and-earlier Fords.
  • Treat a perfect new data plate as a restoration clue, not proof; replacement plates are available and should be supported by old-tag photos or other evidence.

Photo Clues

GT photos should show grille fog lamps on bars, GT fender badges, side stripes, rear valance exhaust cutouts, no rear bumper guards, and a five-dial cluster; missing wiring or brake clues matters more than missing badges.

Pony Interior photos should show running-horse seat embossing, molded door panels, woodgrain trim, courtesy lights, and deluxe steering wheel; a console alone does not make Pony Interior.

Do not let glossy exterior photos substitute for a direct rust inspection; the shop guide recommends a flashlight and magnet rather than trusting fresh paint.

VIN, Tag & Option Mismatch Checks

A claimed GT with standard MUSTANG fender emblems, rocker molding, C-scoop ornaments, rear bumper guards, no disc-brake pedal, or no fog-lamp wiring deserves a deeper clone check.

Paint and trim on the door plate should match the car unless the seller can explain a repaint, door replacement, or special-order paint with records.

Color & Interior Database

Use paint/interior codes as a screening tool, then verify individual cars from door labels, window stickers, Marti reports where available, SVT/Shelby/registry records, or Ford build data.
