1968 Mustang Buyers Guide

The 1967-1968 cars add more high-value option claims, so use Marti data where available and compare GT, GT/CS, big-block, Cobra Jet, paint, and trim claims against physical clues.

Inspection Checklist

Body, Rust, And Structure

  • Inspect the cowl, floor pans, rockers, torque boxes, and rear leaf-spring mounts before judging options or paint.
  • Big-block cars deserve extra shock-tower and front-structure attention; look for cracks, hammered towers, header clearance damage, and poorly repaired collision work.
  • Check NHTSA recall history by year and equipment; 1967-1968 records include steering, tire-rub, and seat-back pivot-pin campaigns that can become inspection prompts.

Options And Special Models

  • For a supported 1967-and-later vehicle, a Marti Report describes how Ford recorded that serial number; it is not an authenticity or condition appraisal. Use it alongside physical and documentary evidence for GT/GTA, S-code, J-code, R-code/Cobra Jet, and special-district claims.
  • GT/CS is not the same as a GT package. Verify coupe body, Marchal/Lucas fog lamps, hood pins, side scoops, pop-open gas cap, rear decklid/end caps, Thunderbird-style taillights, and GT/CS stripe against paperwork.
  • For big-block or Cobra Jet claims, compare VIN/data, engine casting/date codes, transmission, rear axle, cooling, exhaust, suspension, and Marti data before paying rarity money.

Interior And Trim

  • Deluxe interior, GT, GT/CS, and Shelby-style pieces are easy to add; use trim code, original paperwork, and old photos to separate factory content from restoration choices.
  • Marti special-paint entries can appear as Unknown because Ford did not retain the color in this data; physical paint layers and documentation matter when a seller claims a one-off color.

Photo Clues

GT/CS listing photos should show coupe-only Shelby-like side scoops, decklid/end caps, Thunderbird-style taillamps, pop-open gas cap, hood pins, fog lamps, and side stripe.

A 1968 Cobra Jet claim should have supporting engine-bay, drivetrain, cooling, exhaust, and paperwork photos, not just badges or a hood scoop.

Look for door-label paint/trim photos and underhood apron/radiator-support photos in listings; missing tag photos slow verification.

VIN, Tag & Option Mismatch Checks

A GT/CS badge or stripe does not prove a GT package; GT equipment must be separately documented.

A clean replacement door tag or mismatched door color/trim code can be legitimate, but it should raise the standard for Marti, title, and body-stamping evidence.

Color & Interior Database

Use paint/interior codes as a screening tool, then verify individual cars from door labels, window stickers, Marti reports where available, SVT/Shelby/registry records, or Ford build data.
