Not every pre-1996 Mustang is “without computers.” Late Fox and early SN95 cars can use Ford EEC self-tests, while earlier cars are best diagnosed by symptom, spark, fuel, compression, charging, and vacuum checks.

  • Check fuel filter, accelerator-pump shot, and ignition timing before carburetor replacement.

Many pre-OBD symptoms trace back to weak charging output, poor grounds, corroded connectors, or voltage drops.

  • Load-test the battery and verify alternator output.
  • Inspect engine-to-body grounds, fusible links, and starter-solenoid wiring.
  • Voltage-drop test suspect power and ground paths under load.

Classic No-Start Basics

For 1965-1985 Mustangs, start with the battery, starter circuit, ignition spark, fuel delivery, and timing before replacing major parts.

  • Verify battery charge, clean cable connections, and engine ground straps.
  • Confirm cranking speed and starter-solenoid operation.
  • Check for spark, fuel at the carburetor or injectors, and correct base timing.

EEC-IV Self-Test Guidance

Fuel-injected Fox and SN95 Mustangs before OBD-II use Ford EEC-IV self-tests rather than standardized OBD-II P-codes.

  • Use the correct EEC-IV self-test connector and procedure for key-on/engine-off and key-on/engine-running tests.
  • Record continuous-memory codes before clearing anything.
  • Treat EEC-IV numeric codes as Ford-specific clues, then test the circuit or sensor they identify.
