Inspection Checklist

Body, Rust, And Structure

  • Inspect the floor pans, strut towers, windshield channel, sunroof or T-top openings, fender wells, door hinges, and metal around the windows for rust.
  • Inspect the torque boxes for cracks and previous repairs because the shop source associates this damage with cars launched hard.
  • Convertibles need rocker, floor brace, door-gap, quarter-window, top-hydraulic, and V-brace inspections, especially after engine swaps or hard launches.

Drivetrain And EFI

  • Mass-air and speed-density details matter. Verify ECU, MAF, injectors, harness pins, cam choice, vacuum routing, idle quality, and emissions readiness on modified cars.
  • On a T-5 car, test third-gear synchronizer operation carefully; the shop source identifies third-gear synchro failure as a recurring issue, especially on modified cars.
  • Ask how the car was launched and inspect the torque boxes for cracks or repair evidence before accepting an abuse-free history.

Trim And Special Models

  • 1993 Cobra verification should include GT-40 induction, 17-inch directional wheels, rear discs, Cobra bumper/exhaust details, VIN/body data, and production/color records.
  • 1993 Cobra R verification should include Vibrant Red paint, five-lug black wheels, no rear seat/radio/A-C/sound deadener, oil and power-steering coolers, bracing, and race suspension.
  • A VIN appearing in the enthusiast project's consecutive batch does not confirm an SSP, and a second DSO buck tag does not confirm one either. Require matching fleet/DSO paperwork, body and DSO buck tags, and consistent agency equipment clues.

Photo Clues

GT photos should show ground effects, round fog lamps, GT taillights, GT interior cues, and correct wheels for the year; all of these are swappable.

LX 5.0 photos should show subtler bodywork, dual exhaust, V8 hardware, 8.8 rear axle, and badges that agree with VIN and door label.

Five-lug Fox cars are usually conversions except specific SVO/Cobra R contexts; ask for brake, axle, spindle, and wheel documentation.

VIN, Tag & Option Mismatch Checks

A Cobra body kit, pony wheels, 5.0 badges, or Saleen-style pieces do not prove a factory performance model.

Treat a clean replacement tag as a restoration clue rather than proof of original drivetrain or trim; compare it with older tag photographs and other records.
