New Edge

1999 Mustang Owner Guide

SN95 and New Edge cars add OBD-II, PATS, airbags, modular engines, and more electronics while keeping Fox-derived bones. Buy the cleanest structure and wiring you can, then baseline security, cooling, brakes, tires, and convertible or IRS details.

Tips, Tricks & Emergency Access

1996-up cars are OBD-II. A solid check-engine light means the powertrain computer stored a fault; a flashing light means misfire risk, so scan it before continuing a hard test drive.

PATS/SecuriLock uses coded keys. Keep two working programmed keys; no-start complaints can come from key, transceiver, alarm, or aftermarket remote-start issues.

Remote-entry cars can unlock the doors and pop the trunk with the remote; older SN95 cars also have a glove-box trunk release. Check that all lock cylinders still match the keys.

The fuel pump shut-off switch can trip after a hard jolt. On a crank/no-start after impact or transport, inspect for leaks first, then reset the switch only if safe.

Convertible-top operation is specific: the car must be stopped and the parking brake engaged. Check the latches, rear glass, hydraulic cylinders, pump, and top-well storage before lowering the top.

First Things To Do

  1. Scan all modules available to your tool, record OBD-II codes, check readiness monitors, and confirm the service engine soon light works at key-on.
  2. Get two working coded keys and test every remote, trunk release, door lock, and lock cylinder.
  3. Inspect coolant condition, radiator, thermostat, hoses, fan operation, and intake manifold coolant crossover on 4.6L two-valve cars.
  4. Check brake fluid, calipers, hoses, parking brake, ABS light behavior, tire age, and alignment wear.
  5. Clean battery terminals and grounds, then watch charging voltage and idle quality with lights and HVAC on.
  6. Inspect door, trunk, cowl, taillight, and convertible-top seals for water leaks before installing interior parts.
  7. On Cobra IRS cars, inspect differential bushings, half-shafts, wheel hop evidence, and rear tire wear before adding grip or power.

Buyer Checks

Look for rust and collision repairs at strut towers, radiator support, torque boxes, rocker pinch welds, trunk floor, rear quarters, and convertible structure.

Scan OBD-II codes and readiness before purchase; recently cleared monitors can hide emissions or misfire problems.

Inspect 4.6L intake manifold/coolant crossover areas, heater hoses, oil leaks, and spark plug thread history.

Verify Cobra, Bullitt, Mach 1, 40th Anniversary, Mystic/Mystichrome, Saleen, Roush, and other special-model claims with VIN, door tag, SVT or tuner documentation, and original parts.

Test the convertible top, rear quarter windows, trunk release, alarm, power seats, HVAC blend, and instrument cluster on a fully warm car.

On Terminator Cobra cars, check supercharger pulley/tune evidence, intercooler pump operation, clutch, differential, IRS bushings, and documentation for modifications.
