Inspection Checklist

Body, Water, And Structure

Check passenger footwell, cowl/plenum drains, cabin filter area, trunk spare well, taillight seals, convertible well, and firewall wiring for water entry; damp carpet can mean module corrosion.
Inspect front lower control arms, ball joints, strut mounts, panhard bar, rear control arms, axle seals, pinion seal, and differential whine, especially on lowered or drag-raced cars.
Verify open recalls by VIN, especially airbag-related campaigns and any prior collision airbag/module replacement history.

Powertrain

On 2005-2008 4.6L three-valve GTs, ask for spark-plug service history and whether the two-piece spark plugs were removed with the correct procedure and tools.
Manual cars need TR-3650 cold 2-3 and downshift tests, clutch take-up, shifter quality, and fluid/service records.
Automatic cars need 5R55S engagement, flare, coastdown, and fluid/service checks; modified shift strategies should be documented.

Special Models

GT500 verification should include VIN/model paperwork, supercharger/intercooler hardware, heat exchanger, Brembo brakes, wheels, stripes, Shelby badging, and pulley/tune records.
2008-2009 Bullitt should show Highland Green or black paint, plain grille, Bullitt rear badge, unique wheels, dark interior cues, and manual-focused documentation.
GT/CS and appearance packages need window-sticker verification because scoops, stripes, wheels, and spoilers are easy to add.

Photo Clues

Water-entry photos should include passenger footwell, trunk spare well, cowl area, taillight pockets, and convertible top well where applicable.

GT500 photos should show blower/intercooler hardware, big brakes, Shelby-specific front/rear bodywork, stripes/badges, and documentation.

Bullitt photos should show no grille pony, specific wheels, Bullitt deck badge, and correct dark trim; badges alone are not proof.

VIN, Tag & Option Mismatch Checks

A 2005-2008 GT with no spark-plug service history should be priced with plug-removal risk in mind.

S197 appearance cars need window sticker or Ford build data; stripe and scoop packages are common clone material.

Known Buyer Risks

Water leaks, two-piece spark plug service, axle/suspension modifications, TR-3650 behavior, and recall status are the big early-S197 checks.
Shelby and Bullitt cars deserve modification-history review because pulley/tune/exhaust changes affect value and reliability.

Color & Interior Database

Use paint/interior codes as a screening tool, then verify individual cars from door labels, window stickers, Marti reports where available, SVT/Shelby/registry records, or Ford build data.
