The 1969 Mustang was the first major muscle-era restyle, bringing quad headlamps, the SportsRoof name, Mach 1, Boss 302, Boss 429, Grande, and a deep performance engine roster.

Overview
The 1969 restyle made the Mustang longer and wider while keeping the 108-inch wheelbase, and it used quad headlamps inside and outside the grille opening.
Ford literature renamed the fastback body style SportsRoof for 1969.
The model year introduced multiple performance identities at once: Mach 1, Boss 302, Boss 429, Shelby GT350, Shelby GT500, and the final first-era Mustang GT.

Ford's period brochure reports 410 lb-ft at 3,400 rpm; a 2019 Ford retrospective reports 610 Nm, or about 450 lb-ft, corroborated by MustangSpecs' own 450 lb-ft figure. The rating conflict remains attributed rather than averaged.
Boss 429 homologation model
Specifications
MustangSpecs reports 187.4-inch overall body length, 71.9-inch width, 51.3-inch height, and a 108.0-inch wheelbase.
Counts distinguish verified production records, attributed reports, disputed figures, announced limits, and figures that do not survive in available records.
Decode the VIN and door data plate together. The VIN identifies the model year, plant, body, engine, and serial sequence; the data plate adds paint, trim, scheduled build date, DSO, axle, and transmission codes.
For Mach 1, Boss, Shelby, Grande, GT, Sprint, or regional-special claims, compare the door tag to a Marti report, registry entry, buck/build documentation, and package hardware such as suspension, stripes, spoilers, scoops, wheels, and interior trim.

Boss 302
Production
Reported: 1,628Heacock Classic's Boss overview
Reported 1969 Boss 302 model-year production. Currently the leading reported value; no factory ledger has been inspected.
Reported: 1,934Hemmings 1969-1970 Boss 302 Buyer's Guide
Reported 1969 Boss 302 model-year production. The same guide's FAQ instead reports 7,013 for both 1969 and 1970. That internal inconsistency is preserved rather than resolved.
Published Boss 302 counts conflict and no factory ledger has been inspected. Each reported value is listed with its source and scope. A third figure of approximately 1,627 also circulates in enthusiast compilations; MustangCarFacts has not located a specific publication that originates it, so it is noted here with no identified source rather than published as a sourced observation.

Boss 429
Production
Reported: 859Hot Rod
Reported 1969 Boss 429 units; the Mustang and Cougar split is not stated. Hot Rod also reports 1,358 across both years, which does not reconcile with Ford's 1,359.
Reported: 857Heacock Classic
Reported 1969 Boss 429 Mustangs. This figure counts Mustangs only.
Reported: 859Heacock Classic's Boss overview
Reported 1969 Boss 429 cars assembled, stated to include two Boss 429 Cougars. Because this scope includes two Cougars, it is not directly comparable with counts described as Mustangs only.
Reported: 858A sale-listing caption reproduced on Supercars.net
Reported 1969 Boss 429 units; the Mustang and Cougar split is not stated. Second-hand seller copy, not the page's own editorial claim; the same page's own specification box instead states 859.
Published Boss 429 counts conflict over scope as well as value. Ford's own retrospective gives 1,359 for the whole 1969-1970 run without a year split, which reconciles with neither 857 + 499 nor 859 + 499. Whether any of these figures include Boss 429 prototypes, distinct from the two Boss 429 Cougars, was investigated but could not be confirmed from any currently accessible source; no prototype count is published as a claim.

Why it matters
Package-specific equipment and documentation drive authenticity and value.
1969 paint, interior, DSO, axle, and transmission codes live on the door data plate; rare colors, two-tone treatments, Mach 1/Boss/Shelby striping, and special-order paint are best verified with a Marti report or registry documentation.
Three-speed manual, four-speed manual, and automatic transmissions remained available, with heavy-duty combinations tied to the big-block, Cobra Jet, and Boss cars.
The 1969 GT's 5,396 sales versus the Mach 1's 72,458 sales helped end the GT badge after 1969; it would not return on Mustang until 1982.
The 1969 Shelby GT350 and GT500 were built under Ford control with unique fiberglass front styling and were produced for both 1969 and 1970 model-year titling.
First-generation Mustang changes make more sense against the original brief: affordable style, huge personalization, and a platform Ford could build in volume.
Boss 302 existed to connect showroom Mustangs with Ford's Trans-Am racing effort, so its real purpose was homologation as much as street performance.
Boss 429 cars required special front-end and engine-bay work so Ford could fit the semi-hemi 429 into a Mustang body for NASCAR-related homologation.
The Grande gave Mustang a luxury hardtop branch at the same time the Mach 1 and Boss cars pushed the performance image in the opposite direction.
The 96-unit Grabber Orange "Twister Special" is often associated with late-1969 Ford news coverage, but every dated and VIN-series detail places its build and titling in the 1970 model year; it is covered under 1970, not 1969.
